Athletes on track for charity record attempt

LANARKSHIRE athletes are aiming to break world track records in a charity event later this month.

Law and District AAC are organising a Sport Relief event at Wishaw Sports Centre on Saturday, March 20, from 10am to 4pm.

Law athletes will be joined by runners from Motherwell AC and are inviting other sports clubs involved.

Using relay teams, the elite runners will aim to break the men's individual world record for the mile of three minutes 43.13 seconds held by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj and the women's world record of 4.12.56 held by Russian Svetlana Masterkova.

Law spokesman Pat Kelly said: "Of course, we are relaxing some of the rules by using relay teams of 4 x 400 metres or even 8 x 200metres, but it will still be a challenge and it is by no means certain that the records will go."
