Motherwell school buildings face demolition
A MOTHERWELL councillor has hit out at plans to demolish two of Motherwell's historic school buildings.
North Lanarkshire Council's policy and resources (property) sub-committee plan to demolish the former St Joseph's High annex and Dalziel High annex buildings.
St Joseph's in Brandon Street closed as a school in 1973 and was most recently used as the council's planning office in Motherwell while the Dalziel annex was also used as offices as the Dalziel Workspace.
However, the Dalziel Workspace has been vacant since March 2008 and the planning office since April of last year following the opening of the new Dalziel Building in Scott Street.
Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Alan Valentine accused the council of taking 'the easy option' and failing the preserve the town's history.
However, the council's head of property services Ian Nesbit believes the cost of securing the vacant buildings is too high and that vacant sites would be easier to sell.
So far 26,000 has been spent on securing the Brandon Street building, while 24-hour security at the Dalziel Workspace costs 1,500 per week. Demolishing the two buildings will cost 480,000.
Councillor Valentine said: "I realise neither is the prettiest to look at but they are both links to Motherwell's past and we have little enough of that left, surely an alternative can be found to demolition."
