Dalzell steelworkers face more cuts

MOTHERWELL'S beleaguered steel industry is to take another hit with up to 96 workers at Dalzell steelworks facing redundancy.

Corus Long Products Division, a division of Indian-owned Tata Steel, says the business has made significant savings but demand for products continues to deteriorate.

Proposals will lead to the total loss of 1,922 jobs across the UK, and 123 jobs in The Netherlands, with a futher 500 expected to following a review of management, professional, technical and support services.

Consultation has begun with employee representatives at the Dalzell and Clydebridge works in Cambuslang with Corus admitting they don't know at this stage which 96 of their 380 workers across the two sites will be made redundant.

There was a further blow for the struggling plant when thieves stole equipment worth 60,000.
