Bothwell parents hit out in school bus row

COUNCIL bosses have been branded 'heartless' after a five-year-old girl was told she can't sit beside her sister on the school bus.

Abbie Armstrong and big sister Katie (9) were looking forward to meeting up with their friends at the brand new Bothwell Primary School last week.

But the big day was soured when officials ruled the girls must travel separately as the family no longer qualify for free transport to school.

The situation threatens to get even worse because, unless there is a change of heart, Katie will no longer be allowed on the bus after the October holidays.

This week mum Dawn pledged to fight the decision and she has the backing of local councillor Jim McGuigan who has also helped other parents affected by the distance ruling.

Mrs Armstrong, who now has to drive her younger daughter to school, said: "We're not accepting this decision because the so-called 'safe walking route' the council has used takes Abbie past a derelict health board building near our home and the area around it is prone to flooding."

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: "Those children who live more than one mile from the school continue to receive free transport."
