Lee returns to Brannock for orchestra show

FORMER Brannock High pupil Lee Mackie returned to the school to perform with the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra normally only performs at public events but agreed to make a special appearance at Brannock after Lee was chosen as a soloist.

It had been hoped that the concert could take place before the summer holiday when Lee was still at the school, but this didn't prove possible.

The orchestra performed for an audience of Brannock pupils along with music students from Braidhurst and Taylor Highs, pupils from Newarthill Primary, which Lee attended, and his family and friends.

Lee performed a solo trumpet concerto by Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunan, which received a standing ovation from all present.

He has now been accepted to Glasgow University to study dentistry but had one last date to fulfil with the orchestra the next day as they performed at Glasgow City Halls.

Being the last event of the season Lee was presented with the Stokes' Silver Cup for outstanding performance, awarded in memory of orchestra member Michael Stokes who died earlier this year.

He is now considering auditioning for the Strathclyde Jazz Youth Orchestra.
