Lanarkshire boys strike silver

YOUNG footballers from Bellshill, Uddingston and Carfin helped a squad from Lanarkshire strike silver at the International Children's Games in Athens.

Team Lanarkshire including Darren Brownlie (15) of Bellshill; Craig Moore (14) of Uddingston; and Jack Smith (14) of Carfin; were only beaten after a penalty shoot against Pesnica of Slovenia.

The boys were part of the 19-strong Team Lanarkshire who won a total of seven medals in the various events.

Councillor Jim Smith, co-chair of Lanarkshire 2011, said: "Every member of Team Lanarkshire gave excellent performances in Athens and were excellent ambassadors for their sport and Lanarkshire."

Lanarkshire will host the International Children's Games in 2011.
